Culture Clashes
Naveen Mahaarachchi
One liberty that can be taken in composing
is that definitions can be laid according to the artist’s consent. For after
all definitions must have been made so in history.
With the conception of life a liver gets
many invisible obligations that the liver has to fulfill. Obvious are the
basics such as religion and various duties. A less obvious (arguable) yet one
very visible are the concept of culture and its metrics. The encumbrance of the
culture’s demands could vary according to each individual’s social background,
but the percentage of the influence the cultural alumni can impose could be
relatively high.
In “God of Small Things” Ammu wants to
pursue her studies further, but her culture confines her to the walls of her
home. Had patriarchy not existed, mammachi’s pickle factory could have been the
major bread winner for the family. The fact is culture lays rules about how to
behave, even whom to love, where and when…. Evidence is in law itself- customs
are a method of determining conducts of behavior.
Culture is a practice propagated by an entity;
let that be an individual or a group. The practice then gains awareness and
acknowledgement and finally passes as a method of behavior. Natural legislation
by the people. Practices can get outdated, rules can become unsuitable. The
interesting observation arises when amendments are made for the set natural
legislation.
The very purpose of this inquiry is to
understand that the inception level of a custom is created by individuals. The
compounding inquiry is to discern that the reversals or modifications of
culture must also be undertaken by individuals themselves. Thus, very Eastern
parents could produce a very Western child. Thus love laws, behavior ethics can
be challenged; cultures can conflict and clash, within a household to a
cultures hive.
The realization is not dramatic, neither
is it intended to cause a change or an upheaval of constructions and streams.
The artist can let go of the passengers in
midair, there never is an obligation to guarantee a clear, safe journey.
